Marketing is getting the word out about you, your business and/or your products.

In addition to the certainties of death and taxes, you can add ‘if you don’t tell people about your business, you won’t stay in business for long.’

Advertising is probably the best-known method of marketing, but we’re bombarded with so many advertising messages every day we tune them out. It takes something pretty special to get our attention through all that clutter.

Plus it’s mainly an interruption. Commercials between songs on the radio and in the middle of your TV show. Pages of ads and little cards that slip out of magazines. Sheesh.

It’s also expensive and may not have a great return on investment.

If you’re like many small business owners, you’re probably on a tight budget so skip the advertising for now and try some other marketing ideas.

Online marketing comes from a different mindset.

Instead of pushing your message out to many people, who may or may not be interested, try pulling people in by building relationships.

When visitors come to your website, they’re not looking for more advertising and commercials, they’re looking for information – what you offer, how it will help them, how it is different from other similar products or services, whether other people have liked or had success with it, how much it will cost, how can they get it, where you’re located and so much more. You can also use it to educate visitors so they understand the full value that you provide.

Successful marketing builds the ‘know, like and trust’ factors.

Some visitors may know exactly which product they want, but aren’t sure you can provide it. Others may still be trying to figure out what they want.

Sounds a bit like dating, doesn’t it? You start out by introducing yourselves. As your relationship grows you get to know each other, decide whether you like each other and eventually learn to trust each other (hopefully).

And, like dating, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach because each business, each product, each service, each customer is unique.
